I am convinced that there are dedicated, effective staff members at the other state mental hospitals where patients are getting very good care; but it was my distinct privilege to have worked with the patients and staff members of Female Continuing Care (FCC) at Dorothea Dix until the unit was closed on November 15. I think there was something special about the culture of Dix that was flexible enough for a wide range of effective treatments to flourish. There was also a remarkable level of dedication exhibited by staff members across all professional disciplines and job descriptions. The Dix Psychosocial Rehabilitation Treatment program that was directed by Steve Webster ended today, but for many years it provided particularly effective, individualized, active treatment that was a significant factor in the improvement seen in so many Dix patients. On FCC I was joined by my colleagues Drs. Leidy, Twomey, Rumer, and Hall, our social workers Esther Robie and Samaria Colbert, our nurse manager Tori Richards, our treatment team nurse Anthonia Igboko, and our many other very capable nurses, pharmacists, health-care technicians and others, many of whom had worked for years at Dix and all of whom deserve to be singled out for their dedication and their ability to come together as a team to provide a healing environment characterized by validation and acceptance, an environment where our combined skills and caring attitudes helped many of our patients find new hope after years of persistent suffering. I will always value my association with each of our patients and staff members, those who were with us for a relatively short time and those who were there for months or years.
