During today’s event called “Football and the First Amendment at Carolina,” the panel discussed the possible conflict between the First Amendment, the rights of the players and coaches, and the rights of the media.
The panelists were former North Carolina safety Deunta Williams, who was penalized by the NCAA for receiving improper benefits; Daily Tar Heel senior writer Jonathan Jones, who has covered the investigation for the DTH and SI.com; The News & Observer investigative reporter Dan Kane, who has broken news regarding the investigation; and Dr. Ruth Walden, the James Howard and Hallie McLean Parker Distinguished Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication who teaches classes including media law. The panel was moderated by junior Sarah Sessoms.
