In a nail-biting finish, Kentucky barely bested UNC 73-72, in a historic match-up between two of the best teams in college basketball.
The game ended when Kentucky blocked John Henson’s shot with seconds to go.
The Louisville Courier-Journal reported:
“It was a big-time play on their part,” Williams said. “Not many guys can block a jump shot by John Henson. At the end, you just have to congratulate them.”
CBS Sports graded the performance by potential NBA draft picks in today’s game:
There are worlds of storylines coming out of college basketball’s titanic clash between Kentucky and North Carolina, a 73-72 Wildcats win on the back of an Anthony Davis block. And what could have been more fitting than a block by the projected No. 1 prospect in a game which featured a legitimate eleven first-round prospects between the 2012 and 2013 draft, and potentially more? It gave NBA fans a great look at talent.
ESPN on the need for a rematch:
Alas, we won’t get an immediate rematch of the thrilling 40 minutes to which we were just treated, a game that ended as a 73-72 Kentucky win over North Carolina when the clock expired (under questionable circumstances, which we’ll get to in a second) in front of a bananas Rupp Arena crowd in Lexington, Ky. The best we can hope for is that these teams meet again in the spring — whether in the Final Four, or the national title game, or even — who knows? — maybe a little earlier.
The AP on where the teams go from here:
This one will be remembered and could be a prelude to a bigger matchup in the postseason.
“Games like this get you ready for March,” Henson said. “That’s all that matters right now.”
