UNC topped N.C. State74-55 tonight in Chapel Hill, creating an 11-game winning streak by the Tar Heels over the Wolfpack. Senior Tyler Zeller led UNC with 21 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.
From The News & Observer:
It had been eight years since N.C. State entered the Smith Center with as strong of an ACC record as it brought on Thursday night. The Wolfpack’s resurgence inspired confidence, and brought hope that maybe they’d closed some of the gap between them and their longtime rival to the west. But eighth-ranked North Carolina proved otherwise in a dominant 74-55 victory that reaffirmed the gap between these programs remains as wide as ever. The Tar Heels’ victory was their 11th consecutive in this series, and that stretch of supremacy is UNC’s longest over N.C. State since the formation of the ACC in 1953.
From ESPN’s Robbi Pickerall:
What it means: Continued bragging rights for UNC. A bounce-back test for NC State – and fast. The Tar Heels won their 11thstraight in the rivalry series, and in easier fashion that expected considering the Wolfpack, under new coach Mark Gottfried, was off to its best start in six years. It couldn’t handle the Tar Heels’ size, and intensity or defense. State has only until Saturday to regroup and prepare for its next test, against Virginia.
Up next: The Tar Heels will face Georgia Tech on Jan. 29 in Chapel Hill.
