Wake county supports same-sex ban

The Wake County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution Monday endorsing Amendment One, the constitutional same-sex marriage ban that will be presented to voters on May 8.

The vote was 4-3 and fell directly along party lines – all Republicans in favor of the endorsement, all Democrats opposed. This move puts the county government at odds with that of its largest city, Raleigh. The Raleigh City Council voted 6-2 against the ban on Dec. 6.

Same-sex marriage is already illegal in North Carolina by statute, but a constitutional amendment would prevent state judges from voiding that law.

Orange County Commissioners passed a resolution opposing the amendment on Jan. 24, citing the county’s social justice goals:

Orange County along with its local municipalities has adopted the Orange County Civil Rights Ordinance with the purpose and policy to promote the equal treatment of all individuals; prohibits discrimination in Orange County based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, familial status, and veteran status; to protect residents’ lawful interests and their personal dignity so as to make available to the County their full productive and creative capacities, and to prevent public and domestic strife, crime, and unrest within Orange County.
